Absol deserves an award for being the edgiest Pokemon ever designed, and Mega Absol just turns the drama up to twelve. This Special Illustration Rare captures that energy perfectly. The dark background makes its bright white fur and flowing mane look almost supernatural. At just under $100, it's the cheapest chase card on this list, which is hilarious because cheap and Mega Absol should not belong in the same sentence. I would still trade half my collection for it.
Lillie's Determination (Special Illustration Rare) – $171.15
If you have been waiting for another card of Lillie and her famous bag, your wait is over. This card will have you screaming Nebby! Get in the bag! all over again. The bright sky and pastel colors make it one of the brightest chase cards in the set. Lillie is also the most expensive trainer card here, beating Wally, Acerola, and Lt. Surge. As someone who has never pulled a high-end trainer, I can confirm this one is pure fairy tale material.
Mega Latias ex (Special Illustration Rare) – $189.60
Mega Latias is a psychological test disguised as a Pokemon card. It looks nearly identical to Mega Latios except for red eyes instead of yellow. The explosion of colors around Latias makes it even harder to tell what you are looking at. This card commands almost $190, which is a lot for a card that makes me question my eyesight. Still, the chaotic scene is gorgeous in a what am I even looking at kind of way.
Mega Venusaur ex (Special Illustration Rare) – $222.51
Mega Venusaur is easily one of the most beautiful cards in the set. The colors are balanced, and the composition draws your eye to a small central point below Venusaur while still showing off its massive flower. At almost $225, this is the first card on this list to break the $200 barrier. I spent ten minutes staring at this artwork and then remembered I was not any closer to owning it.
Mega Lucario ex (Special Illustration Rare) – $276.71
Mega Lucario jumps way up the price chart. Instead of the bright explosion style, it opts for a more realistic city skyline background. It honestly reminds me of Charizard V from Brilliant Stars, and that comparison alone explains the value. This card is a bold battle scene that makes Lucario look like an urban legend or a very serious action movie star.
Mega Gardevoir ex (Special Illustration Rare) – $325.79
Mega Gardevoir's Special Illustration Rare is the best keep looking and find more card in the set. Yes, Mega Gardevoir is in the center, but you can also spot its regular form and both pre-evolutions. The glittering stones everywhere create a stunning, almost magical scene. At over $325, this is the most valuable Special Illustration Rare in Mega Evolution. It also proves that Gardevoir fans are willing to spend absolute nonsense money.
Mega Gardevoir ex (Mega Hyper Rare) – $498.16
And then Gardevoir shows up again, this time as a Mega Hyper Rare. This new rarity is wild. The all-gold background is so bright it should come with a warning label. The minimal etched depiction of Gardevoir is oddly elegant. At just under $500, it costs more than double the Mega Lucario ex SIR. These gold cards are setting an intimidating standard. I keep expecting one to fall out of a pack just to prove the universe has a sense of humor.
Mega Lucario ex (Mega Hyper Rare) – $634.13
Finally, we have the top dog. Mega Lucario ex Mega Hyper Rare is the most valuable card in the set at over $634. Unlike Gardevoir's minimal gold etching, this one gives you a noticeably fuller depiction of Mega Lucario. The shadowy figure against the overwhelming gold background looks like a medal that learned how to fight. Wherever the market takes it, this card has definitely etched its name into Pokemon TCG history. I will not be buying it unless I sell a kidney.
Overall, Mega Evolution is a dangerous set for anyone with poor impulse control, which describes basically every Pokemon player I know. The mix of nostalgic Mega Evolutions and new Mega Hyper Rares makes it one of the most exciting releases in years. I will be over here with my bulk commons, pretending I am fine.
